JoinAfrica.org – Free Internet Service for the Continent
We can’t believe it’s taken us this long to learn about JoinAfrica.org, a project started by the co-founder of Kayak, Paul English. In fact, it wasn’t until this Fast Company article that we learned of his “ambitious, long-term project to create free, low-bandwidth Internet access across the entire continent of Africa.”
Just the kind of projects breadpig likes.
Kayak has given English the financial freedom to pursue such a fabulously audacious endeavor. Active in the non-profit world, he’s already been busy in this area and expects to devote the next decade of his life to bring this all to fruition.
FastCompany intereviewed him about JoinAfrica — his frankness is refreshing:
[...] It became clear that one-off projects weren’t enough. “It occurred to me that there is something bigger that needs to be done,” he says. “The continent of Africa has been so fucked over from an economic standpoint — as an engineer, how do I use my skills to do something that’s transformative?”
We’ll be keeping an eye on this promising non-profit, as there may be some great opportunities for collaboration…
