Featured Breadpig Bookseller: Bookshop Santa Cruz Loves xkcd

We received these photos from Bookshop Santa Cruz, an independent bookseller (rocking since 1966!) that’s been featuring the breadpig-published xkcd: volume 0 for the last couple of months.

Not only has it been a best-seller (there are evidently quite a few well-tanned geeks in Santa Cruz) but an employee there wrote up a ’shelf talker’ for the book, which you can see pictured above and has been transcribed below for your reading delight.

XKCD by Randall Munroe
If you’re not an avid XKCD reader, or haven’t been forwarded one of these fantastic web-comics by a friend, now’s your chance to get in on one of the smartest, nerdiest and most romantic online comic strips.  Munroe’s long-running comic has finally been compiled into one book, so you can revisit your favorite strips, discover one you might have missed, or become a newly converted fan.—KMS

Breadpig loves independent booksellers [see our entry on Borderlandands Books -- first bookstore in the universe to carry xkcd: volume 0] and we’re working on a great way to show off that love that should also be a handy tool for all of you xkcd fans. In the meantime, we’re happy to spotlight some outstanding indies who’ve really gone above and beyond for this book (and their customers who are demanding it).

ROFLDNA Has Arrived! (And It’s Glorious)

The breadpig couldn’t be more pleased. This DNA artwork will be a handsome addition to someone’s desk, mantle, or dinner table. The designers at DNA11 did a great job synthesizing meme-master DNA and style it with their signatures.

ROFLDNA

Bidding will start on Monday, April 6.

New LOLmagnetz Model-Cat

Our first model-cat, Roslyn, was an exceptional feline (with an exceptional owner). So for version II of LOLmagnetz, the bar was set quite high.

Fortunately, Matilda didn’t let us down. Hopefully all this publicity won’t go to her head, but we’ve heard she has always been quite the diva.

new LOLmagnetz case

Let us know what you think of the new model-cat. We’ll work out a more formal process to discover the next edition’s covermodel. We’ve got more felines to make famous.

The Votes Are In – A ROFLDNA Design Selected

Democracy isn’t always pretty, but it’s the best thing we’ve got right now. The breadpig solicited your thoughts on the two designs for ROFLDNA and we came out with a pretty clear winner.

The artists @ DNA11 are now at work producing this genetic ROFLmasterpiece. More details to come.

I’m The 5th Cylon Shirt Gets Some Skinjob Lovin’ From PopCultureTees

popculturetees.com likes breadpigThis has been a great week for breadpig tees. Philip K. Dick inspired our most popular shirt and the anniversary of his death brought it a bunch of attention. And now our I’m the 5th Cylon shirt is featured on PopCultureTees with a review full of gusto:

Probably the strangest named shop we’ve featured on the site, these are the same guys who are behind reddit, and are dedicated to offering geeky stuff to folks who like that kind of thing.

Pick up this tee just in time for the series end [...] Also, all profits from this design go to the EFF. Cool.

The breadpig will disregard that nonsense about it being a “strange name” and go on to thank them for drawing some more attention to our Spoiler Alert: I’m the 5th Cylon shirts, which already raised $500 for EFF last year.

Compelling Review Of LOLmagnetz (Or, How To Instantly Become The Office God)

LOLatWorkBrian Ho is a man who knows how to have a good time. Furthermore, he’s a man who knows how to help his office have a good time. All while adhering to even the strictest corporate guidelines prohibiting at-work alcohol consumption.

The secret is LOLmagnetz. And with one kit, Brian turned his cubicle into the greatest wall in the office — a greater wall than even that one in China.

And today, my prediction started to come true as myself and some co-workers started creating (several inappropriate) phrases periodically throughout the day. We took it a level up when we started creating some phrases around some of the other things stuck to the cabinet including some of the group pictures from previous birthday parties.

Brilliant. The breadpig salutes you, Brian. Especially for this.

No one said LOLart had to be high art (though it’s often created while high). See the rest of Brian’s pictures on his LiveJournal.

Dreaming Of Androids Shirt Also Considered “Cool Thing Under $29.99″

They kindly heaped on the praise — enough to make even the stalwart breadpig blush:

Have you ever wondered what sheep dream about? Jumping fences? I doubt it.

But now, the question is finally answered by the Dreaming of Androids t-shirt. Makes perfect sense, doesn’t it? Well, as long as we’re talking about electric sheep, at least (look at that little power cord, aww).

Best suited for Philip K. Dick fans, of course, but the design is so good it would be a shame to not recommend it to everyone, really.

Why thank you, s2999.com, if only we’d had more in stock to keep up with the demand. Thanks to breadpig’s allies, we’ve turned this shirt from our best-seller into the far and away best-seller.

Dreaming Of Androids Shirt Featured On Tcritic

Karl Long of Tcritic recognized the death of Philip K. Dick yesterday and in so doing, gave a very kind shoutout to breadpig’s most popular shirt, Dreaming of Androids. The breadpig considers Karl a proud comrade for your service; here he is, in his own words:

The Dreaming Of Androids T-Shirt is a charming reference to one of Philip K. Dick’s renowned novel[s], “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” which was the basis for the classic movie Blade Runner.

We’re overdue for a restocking…

Tweetz About LOLmagnetz

LOLtweetzThe breadpig only recently discovered twitter and found that the breadpig legion had already made its presence known.

Guenlian, a satisfied breadpigger and owner of LOLmagnetz used this hip messaging system to express approval about our LOL instruction manual:

is amazed that LOLmagnetz come with instructions! “Precautions For Use: Your home is full of magnetic surfaces compatible with LOLmagnetz”

But that wasn’t all! Shortly thereafter came another tweet:

“we recommend that LOLmagnetz not be used” on computers. Complete with drawing of fried CPU with the “Can”, “Has”&”Fail” magnetz applied.

Thank you, Guenlian, for proving that some people still do read the manual. The breadpig labored over these instructions and is pleased to know these efforts weren’t in vain.

More Insight Into Breadpig The Cat, Adopted In Record Time

It’s not secret that breadpig has a soft spot for the SF SPCA, but it’s apparently mutual. After naming an orphaned kitten “breadpig,” our breadpig loyalists were pleased to see him get adopted before the weekend concluded.

Now we’re treated with some more background on the adoption story:

The woman has been looking for a cat for 3 months and immediately connected to him because he was rubbing against the door and being cute, of course. She was hesitant but went to the adoption desk and learned more about him. The volunteer stated that initially it was the name ” Breadpig” that intrigued her… hhhmmm. The cat did all the rest. She will be changing the name. You can leave that part out.

Sounds like a classic breadpig maneuver.

We understand that breadpig’s new owner would want him to take an alias for his own safety. Well played.
