Our band‘s lead guitarist, Brian, was recently wearing his breadpig tee on a plane ride and the woman beside him asked about the curious logo. He told her about the work we do here at breadpig:

Then she said the name made perfect sense. This really piqued my curiosity, since I know the true story of how it was picked entirely out of hilarity over the domain. She said ‘bread’ constitutes a universal symbol for giving and charity. A token of the simple things you can donate to the poor. The suffix of ‘pig’ stands for how the money is saved and stockpiled, like a piggybank, until the right time to spend it.

Like Brian said, we didn’t give the name much thought when we registered breadpig.com, but it’s fun hearing people’s interpretations. Whatever the breadpig means to you, we’re just happy you support it.

As far as we know, this was breadpig’s first appearance on Brazilian TV — certainly its first time on MTV Brasil.

Though HypeMachine has continued to rocket in popularity over the last few years, Anthony has remained an extremely loyal breadpig legionnaire. You may remember Anthony appearing in an Austrian magazine a couple years back also in his breadpig shirt.

We love you, Breadpig Legion, but today we’d like to spotlight an individual Breadpig Legionnaire of the Week, Jay “Awesomesauce” Liu (OK, we made up that nickname).

Here’s the latest breadpig sighting in the wild. It’s on the chest of Jay Liu who’s rocking it at a Mets game. You can’t help but wonder how jealous the guy who caught that homerun ball is of the dude standing behind him with a breadpig shirt on. Watch the video.

Breadpig is on a rally car, a Mongol Rally car. As it speeds through Europe on its way to Mongolia, we’re wishing the team well.

Exploding Marmalade plastered our porcine hero on the side of their car in exchange for some moral support and a donation to Mercy Corps. We were thrilled to oblige on both counts. Thanks for carrying our banner, gentlemen!

They’ve just gotten started, but it looks like they’re already in Romania at the time of this writing. Here’s their latest update, but since it’ll already be old news by the time you read it, you’d better follow them on twitter:

On the road since last Friday and so far we are doing well.We have covered 1466 miles and are currently in Brno, Czech Republic and should be making our way today to Budapest, Hungary and then onto Romania.

We have had a great first few days on the rally from the launch at Goodwood, UK to the Czechout Party in Klenova Castle.

Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to our teammate Pedro and dropped him at Gatwich after the launch.We know he wanted to come all the way and we wish him and his wife all the best with the new arrival.
All the teams have now dispersed each going different routes and this will become the real challenge.We are still experiencing very good road conditions and hope to well into Romania.

The Berlingo is doing well and has now been christened Bertie.We have only had to change one tyre and re-attach the exhaust but other than that Bertie is loving the road.

Were you in Golden Gate Park (SF) last Saturday? If so, you possibly witnessed (or joined) a couple hundred elite xkcd fans who braved the cold June afternoon to meet Randall Munroe. You probably already know this, but it turns out you’re awesome for doing so. Randy had even prepared 256 limited edition “service packs” for each of the first 256 attendees.

You see, there was a puzzle throughout the xkcd book we published, which some ambitious xkcd readers managed to crack after months of work.

The solution was a set of coordinates, time, and date with lots of love. That day was this past Saturday the 26th. There was a bobcat in a box, an xkcd kite (no camera, unfortunately), delicious xkcd cupcakes, and lots of glorious geekery!

We featured them once back in March, but they’re due for another bit of spotlight.

They just sold out of another round of xkcd: volume 0 so give them a few days to receive the new inventory from us. In the meantime, here are some photos from the display you’re likely to find once they’re back in stock. Notice the use of the recent xkcd-malamanteau debacle on Wikipedia.

Santa Cruz geeks have been thrilled, albeit surprised, to find xkcd: volume 0 on their shelves. As Dave (of Bookshop Santa Cruz) puts it:

“Having lots of fun selling it and seeing people walk in and be surprised to actually find it in a store, or in a physical incarnation at all.”

We received these photos from Bookshop Santa Cruz, an independent bookseller (rocking since 1966!) that’s been featuring the breadpig-published xkcd: volume 0 for the last couple of months.

Not only has it been a best-seller (there are evidently quite a few well-tanned geeks in Santa Cruz) but an employee there wrote up a ‘shelf talker’ for the book, which you can see pictured here and has been transcribed below for your reading delight.

Breadpig loves independent booksellers [see our entry on Borderlandands Books -- first bookstore in the universe to carry xkcd: volume 0] and we’re working on a great way to show off that love that should also be a handy tool for all of you xkcd fans. In the meantime, we’re happy to spotlight some outstanding indies who’ve really gone above and beyond for this book (and their customers who are demanding it).

When the book was first announced in the New York Times, the very first bookstore to email us to stock xkcd: volume 0 was Borderlands Books, a San Francisco geek institution. Not only were we thrilled to have our book on their shelves, we could hand-deliver the first batch — they’re only a few blocks away from breadpig HQ.

The cats were feeling frisky when we dropped off their shipment and it seemed fit to mark the occasion with a few snapshots. If you’re ever in the Mission neighborhood of SF, there’s no shortage of independent bookstores, but there’s only one geek mecca known as Borderlands. Give it a visit, say ‘Hi’ to the hairless cats and maybe pick up a copy of xkcd: volume 0. Or if you hate real-life, follow them on the twitter.

Avid breadpig supporter and fantastic founder of hypemachine, Anthony Volodkin, rocked the brown breadpig tee to a photoshoot in a German an Austrian magazine. The headline instructs you to “Go, whither the music takes you.” The obvious subtext here is that you should be downloading the breadpig band’s hit album from iTunes. The breadpig still has no clue how it managed that one, even being a super hero.

If you aren’t already using TheHypeMachine, you’re probably not very hip to music. If you are a laggard when it comes to the dopest jams, look no further than Anthony’s creation. And please let us know if you discover any other breadpig sightings – we’ll high5 you for each one.
